Jealous Thai university student stabs friend over alleged affair

A Thai university student yesterday repeatedly stabbed his friend in a frenzied attack at a condominium in the central province of Pathum Thani. The suspect accused the victim of having an affair with his girlfriend.
Officers from Khlong Luang Police Station responded to the stabbing report at the condo in the Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani at around 1am yesterday, March 13. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the victim, 19 year old Rutjaporn, at the condo entrance.
Police witnessed Rutjaporn’s body covered in blood and stab wounds to his face, chest, and right arm. He was rushed to Thammasat University Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
The stabbing occurred in the hallway on the first floor of the condominium. A large amount of blood was present at the scene, along with a 30-centimetre knife used in the attack.
Rutjaporn told officers that the attacker was his friend, 19 year old Shinnawat, who later turned himself in at the police station, accompanied by his parents. Rutjaporn said that Shinnawat accused him of having an affair with his girlfriend while under the influence of cannabis.

Shinnawat’s parents admitted that their son used cannabis before committing the crime. They insisted that this was the first time their son had tried it.
Shinnawat’s father told police that he picked up his son from the condo and planned to take him to a hospital but his son refused.
As a result, he took his son back to their home in the Rama 3 area of Bangkok to rest before taking him to the police station.

Police suspect that Shinnawat may have used drugs other than cannabis and conducted further drug tests, the results of which have not yet been released.
Officers initially charged the attacker under Section 297 of the Criminal Code: physically assaulting another person, resulting in serious injury. The penalty is imprisonment for six months to 10 years and a fine ranging from 10,000 to 200,000 baht.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether Shinnawat’s actions constitute attempted murder. Shinnawat’s girlfriend will also be summoned for questioning regarding the nature of her relationship with the victim.
