Get ready for more long weekends. The Thai Cabinet added 8 holidays to the 2021 calendar, including an extra day for Songkran, the Thai New Year celebrated by massive water flights.

Adding the extra holidays is an effort to promote domestic tourism and stimulate the economy which was battered by the pandemic. A government spokesperson confirmed the additional holidays with the Associated Press. The Cabinet set 4 national holidays and 4 regional holidays.

National holidays

  • Friday, February 12 for the Chinese New Year
  • Monday, April 12, adding a day to Songkran holiday from April 13-15
  • Tuesday, July 27 for substitution day for Buddhist Lent
  • Friday, September 24 to celebrate Mahidol Day which is in remembrance of Prince of Songkhla, Mahidol Adulyadej

Regional holidays

  • Friday, March 26 for Wai Phra That (Northern Thailand)
  • Monday, May 10 for Bun Bang Fai, known as the Rocket Festival (Northeastern Thailand)
  • Wednesday, October 6 for Sart Thai, a festival held on the 10th lunar month (Southern Thailand)
  • Thursday, October 21 for the End of Buddhist Lent (Central Thailand)

That is nice, but Thailand already has a lot holidays in the calendar.

Just curious, How does it done with the staff/worker’s payment? Is that payed holiday or? Does the hiring company pay or the government?

Despite your impeccable source, the Pattaya News, I think you’ll find these are government holidays (วันหยุดราชการ), NOT national holidays (วันหยุดนักขัตฤกษ์).

    Very different.

More holidays just doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. More days some folks might not get paid and just sit at home and be miserable. This will not inspire me to take an extra weekend holiday. I just don’t understand why. Give us another cut on the electricity bills instead.

I get the distinction between government and national holidays. I’ll be generous here. I think the writer was trying to emphasize that some of these holidays won’t be nationwide.

The way the Thai economy is going, The Thais will take a lot more than 8 more days off work. It will be more like 80.

Where is the Santa Festival? The pandemic hit hard Santa countries wont be happy. They deserve a government holiday to satisfy democratically platonic idiocy.

Sounds to me like there are a lot of government officials running around like headless chickens at the moment. Maybe they should talk to each other before talking to the media, and making themselves look like fools in the process.

we just celebrated our 21st anniversary (my Thai wife and I). Does that qualify as a long time? 2 gr8 kids. Retired now at 53 (self made not handed on a plate) and just heading outside to paint my garden walls in the lovely warm winter sun with a few cold beers. Not been back to my country in 6 years and have no plans to ever go back. Living the dream Buddy. Sounds like you might have a bit of a chip on your shoulder Ian…

Interesting… when we see more holidays, promoting more domestic travel (/transmission) …
-while there’s no sight of vaccination of the general public starting until much later in the next year, and, it has been openly published, only enough AstraZenica vaccine purchased by the Government to cover less than 30% of the people.
Of course,… – just an observation of coincidence!
