Bangkok mother and son arrested for fraud

Yesterday, a mother and son were arrested in Bangkok after the son allegedly pretended to sell discounted AirPods online while using his mother’s account for transferring funds.

The unnamed 33 year old son had posted on Facebook that he had AirPods for sale at 5,500 baht a pop, a sale from their “normal” retail price of 8,900 baht. However, the son had an (alleged) trick up his sleeve. He didn’t send any AirPods.

The man’s alleged fraud cost over 50 people more than 100,000 baht.

The man reportedly fessed up to the Facebook “sale” but claims it was a “supply chain problem” due to the Covid situation. He says the company/AirPod provider wasn’t able to send the AirPods. The man did not say why he didn’t return the money if there was a supply chain issue. Nor did the man explain why he didn’t stop “selling” the devices when he found out about this hiccup in the business model, which may have prevented him from being charged with fraud.

The mother says she was entirely ignorant of her entrepreneurial son’s behaviour.

However, the police proved indifferent to the mother’s protestations and the son’s middle-man issues and charged them both with extortion, conspiracy to commit fraud and making false representations online.
