6 Thai inmates stab prisoner to death in Bangkok prison (video)
Six Thai prisoners at Minburi Remand Prison in Bangkok assaulted and stabbed a fellow inmate to death with a sharpened iron rod and spoon for exposing their involvement in a drug case.
Officers from Min Buri Police Station reported to the media that the stabbing occurred near the prison welfare shop in the fifth control area. The male prisoner, Yutthakarn, was found lying on the ground in critical condition with multiple stab wounds across his body.
Yutthakarn was arrested and imprisoned for physical assault and possession of methamphetamine, also known as Yaba. He was taken to the prison’s medical unit but later succumbed to his injuries.
The six inmates involved in the incident were detained at the scene. They are identified as:
- Narong (prisoner for mule account fraud)
- Panupong (drug-related prisoner)
- Choktawee (theft-related prisoner)
- Chatchai (drug-related prisoner)
- Weerayuth (theft-related prisoner)
- Watcharapong (drug-related prisoner)
Three weapons were seized, including two sharpened iron rods and one sharpened spoon. The attackers fashioned the items they found within the prison, sharpening them to create weapons, which they managed to conceal from prison guards, sparking criticism over security measures.
Following CCTV footage review, the attackers fled the scene after the stabbing, though they could not get far within the restricted area of the prison.
Choktawee confessed that he initially approached the victim, kicking him in the face and stabbing him once in the back. Panupong and Narong then repeatedly stabbed Yutthakarn. The other three inmates confessed to also physically assaulting him.
The six inmates claimed that the motive for the fatal assault was a conflict dating back to when they were outside prison. They came from rival drug gangs known as Ban Nong Chok and Ban Romklao, with the attackers belonging to Ban Romklao.
Drug dealers and users from Ban Nong Chok were arrested before the members of Ban Romklao. In custody, they exposed Ban Romklao’s drug use and smuggling activities, leading to their arrests. The two groups previously engaged in a physical altercation before the fatal stabbing.
In addition to imposing further penalties on the attackers, the Department of Corrections plans to investigate the prison for any hidden weapons and assess the role of prison guards whose negligence may have contributed to the murder.
