Krabi health authorities have taken action against two restaurants in Ao Nang, Krabi for releasing wastewater into a canal that drains into the sea.
Tourists in the area complained about the foul odours coming from the canal. Authorities say it has adversely affected tourism to the popular tourist spot.
Deputy Krabi Governor Somkuan Khan-ngern has responded to the wastewater reports saying, “We will inspect all businesses along the Chak Canal that drains into Ao Nang and punish all who release untreated wastewater.”
“There are many restaurants and resorts along the canal, though so far, only two restaurants – Thailandia and Taj Palace – have been caught releasing untreated wastewater.”
“Owners of the restaurants have been fined 10,000 baht each for violating the law governing cleanliness in public places.”
“We will use several measures (to improve water quality in the area),” adding that in the long run, he will also seek a budget to develop a comprehensive wastewater treatment system.
