John Oliver calls out Ron DeSantis for Thai food mispronunciation (video)
Funnyman John Oliver become embroiled in a bizarre spat with Ron DeSantis when the comedian called out the Florida governor for his pronunciation of Thai food.
De Santis is said to be furious with Oliver after he revealed on a late-night talk show that as a young man, the politician would purposely mispronounce Thai food as “thigh food” in order to test his potential dates.
On Late Night With Seth Meyers the 45 year old British-born comedian and TV host said…
“Yes, that was his technique on the dating scene.
“He would mispronounce ‘thigh food’ and wait for his date to react. And apparently, if she corrected him, he would end the date because he did not want to be corrected.
“We reached out to find out, like, is this true? If not, please do deny it, because it feels really true. It feels so emblematic of you as a human being. If you didn’t do it, arguably you should have done. It would have made more sense of who you are.”
Oliver had earlier tried to hold DeSantis to account in one of his investigative stories at the start of the month. He highlighted a number of his policy failures and his unwillingness to answer questions from the press, among many other things.
The 44 year old politician ghosted Oliver for about a month before calling the comedian “irrelevant.”
The self-deprecating Oliver took the insult in good fun.
“It’s a fair hit. It might be the first thing he’s said I’ve agreed with, to be honest. I mean, also, it’s a little rich, because we reached out to him in the advance of that piece … we had pages of questions for him and he ghosted us on all of them. So yeah, his response was literally irrelevant because he didn’t f**king provide one.”
Oliver also had a pop at the Oscars in which he explained exactly why he thought Jimmy Kimmel was perfect for the role and why he would never host the extravaganza.
“I don’t think it would be a net benefit for anyone involved.
“The great thing about Kimmel is that he’s obviously funny. But also, you’re confident that there is this low-lying contempt for the whole event.
“He somehow doesn’t manage to poison the room with that visible contempt, and that is a kind of magic trick I couldn’t do.
“I could not, at any point, say, ‘It’s going to be a magical night.’ I’d say, ‘It’s not though, is it? These are some of the most over-praised people on Earth, and we’re going to give them shiny trophies like they’re dogs.’”
