Thai man buys gold with 30,000 baht in coins

A Thai man has used nothing but coins to buy 30,000 baht of gold at a shop in the northeast province of Maha Sarakham.

Tangmo Konrakkwai, the shop owner, said the customer called and asked if the store accepted coins as payment for gold. She told the customer yes but didn’t think the payment would only consist of coins.

According to KhaoSod English, the video of the man bringing in a large number of coins went viral on TikTok. In the video, the man is emptying the coins to be used as payment for gold at the Buddasingchangthong shop in the Sermthai Complex in the Mueang Maha Sarakham District of the same-named province.

When Tangmo saw the customer arriving with a big, blue basket full of coins, she was shocked and asked if she could take a video of him. The customer agreed.

The customer said he was from Roi Et and was the owner of a laundromat, which explains why he had so many coins. He said he tried to use the coins to buy gold in Roi Et, but they said no.

Tangmo said that customers from Yasothon and Buriram have come with coins before to buy gold, but not as many as this man. She says the shop needed five people to count the coins and did not charge a counting fee.

If the man had gone to a commercial bank, they would have deducted two baht from every 100 baht counted. Currently, one gram of gold costs 2,055 baht in Thailand or US$60 dollars.

The customer bought seven gold rings and the shop also gave him a discount and a cap. The man said he would come back every month so long as the shop accepts coins.

Just last year, staff at a gold shop in the same province praised a 10 year old girl after she bought a 4,000 baht gold ring as a birthday gift for her mother.
