Thai police intercept 2 million meth pills in sedan bust
Thai police in Wang Noi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, arrested a major drug trafficker, seizing a significant quantity of methamphetamine pills hidden in a sedan. The arrest happened after a keen-eyed officer noticed the vehicle appeared heavily loaded, leading to a search that uncovered five sacks of drugs.
Yesterday, October 28, at the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Police Headquarters, Niwat Rungsakorn, Governor of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, with Police Major General Chotiwat Luengwilai and Police Colonel Somjet Manboot, announced the successful capture of 2,046,000 methamphetamine pills.
Niwat revealed that the operation took place at 2am, Sunday, October 27, when Wang Noi police set up a crime prevention checkpoint on a public road alongside Canal 1 in Moo 5, Phayom subdistrict, Wang Noi district, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.
A white Toyota sedan with registration number 8498 from Roi Et province approached the checkpoint. The driver, identified as Krisana, was initially non-suspicious. However, the officers noticed the car seemed to be carrying a heavy load and requested to search the trunk. Inside, they discovered five sacks containing a total of 2,046,000 methamphetamine pills, said Niwat
“This arrest is significant due to the sheer amount of methamphetamine seized. The suspect showed remarkable audacity by driving through the checkpoint with such a large quantity of drugs. Typically, drug traffickers avoid checkpoints when transporting large quantities.
“Credit must be given to the Wang Noi police for their keen observation and thorough inspection. The presence of soil and sand on the car and sacks suggests the drugs were likely transported through natural channels from neighbouring countries.”
Pol. Maj. Gen. Chotiwat commented on the evolving tactics of drug traffickers. He noted that traffickers are now using sedans instead of pickup trucks or larger vehicles to transport large quantities of drugs, making it easier to evade detection and capture. This particular shipment originated from the northeastern provinces and was destined for Bangkok and its surrounding areas, reported KhaoSod.
“The shift to using sedans for drug transportation represents a new strategy to avoid police scrutiny. Therefore, we have instructed the Wang Noi police and the special task force responsible for investigating and seizing assets in major drug cases to broaden their investigation.
“Our goal is to apprehend and prosecute all individuals involved in this drug trafficking network.”
