A study carried out by the faculty of medicine at Thammasat University and the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology has found that antibodies halve every 40 days after 2 doses of the Sinovac vaccine. Researcher Anan Jongkaewwattana says 500 people who received both doses of the Chinese vaccine took part in the study. The findings confirmed that their levels of Covid-19 antibodies dropped by 50% every 40 days.

According to a Bangkok Post report, those who received their second dose of Sinovac more than 60 days after the first showed lower levels of antibodies than those who’d received the second dose sooner. Anan says that within 60 days of the second shot being administered, the Sinovac vaccine shows efficacy of 60% – 70% against the original strain of the virus. The efficacy drops to 50% in people who’ve received the second dose more than 60 days after the first. He adds that people over the age of 40 showed lower levels of immunity than younger participants. In addition, there is no data on the vaccine’s efficacy against newer, highly contagious strains, like the Alpha and Delta variants.

However, the Bangkok Post reports that according to government official Chalermchai Boonyaleepun, Covid-19 vaccines have been effective in preventing infections and deaths in healthcare workers, despite reports of some inoculated staff contracting the virus. According to Chalermchai, of 700,000 fully vaccinated healthcare workers, just 707 became infected. He adds that the infection rate among non-vaccinated medical staff is 8 times higher. 7 healthcare workers have now died of Covid-19, 2 of whom were fully vaccinated. It’s understood most medical staff have been inoculated with 2 doses of Sinovac.
