The Casa Sur Hotel staff in Palermo, where Payne died, are now under investigation for allegedly supplying him with drugs. A cleaner and another hotel employee reportedly hid narcotics in a Dove soap box found in Payne’s room. Detectives discovered white powder, chemical crystals, prescription tablets, and other drug paraphernalia in the suite.
Police have sent the substances, believed to be cocaine and crack cocaine, for analysis. They are also investigating why a taxi was booked for Payne to an impoverished neighbourhood 15 miles away, linked to a suspected drug supplier.
According to the confidant, two hotel employees provided Payne with drugs, sending taxis to collect packages. After Payne’s death, it was discovered that one taxi had gone to the cleaner’s home address, leading to his dismissal. The friend added that despite Payne’s efforts to stay clean, he was offered alcohol and drugs as soon as he arrived at the hotel.
Payne died after falling from his third-floor balcony last Wednesday afternoon. A post-mortem revealed he suffered multiple injuries. Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office is treating his death as ‘inconclusive’ while awaiting toxicology results, expected within 10 to 15 days. Prosecutor Marcelo Roma is investigating the role of illegal drugs and prescription medication in Payne’s death.
Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, arrived in Buenos Aires last week to identify his son’s body and arrange its repatriation to the UK. The singer’s funeral is anticipated to take place in November.
