MCA awaits seat negotiations before activating polls machinery
The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) anticipates finalising seat negotiations for the upcoming six state elections before activating its campaign machinery, according to party president Wee Ka Siong. He emphasised the importance of fostering a spirit of unity within the government during these discussions.
Wee Ka Siong mentioned that one of the most significant challenges faced by political parties is manifesting this unity during seat negotiations. He stated, “Once it (seat talks) has been completed, then the respective parties will know how to face their grassroots.” His comments followed his participation in the Johor Baru MCA division election.
In response to a question about MCA’s preparedness to support the unity government’s party machinery in the state elections, which are rumoured to take place by August, Wee urged fellow parties not to prematurely claim certain seats before finalising negotiations. He said, “No parties should claim that certain seats belong to them when negotiations are not completed yet. A true test of leaders’ maturity is when the spirit of the unity government is translated in the seats up for grabs in the state elections.”
The states of Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, and Terengganu are expected to dissolve their state assemblies by early July. As the MCA and other political parties work together to allocate seats, the focus remains on fostering unity and collaboration during this crucial election period.
