Future luminaries unite: Hong Kong Laureate Forum to showcase Shaw Prize scientists
The prestigious Hong Kong Laureate Forum has been pencilled in later this year bringing together over 20 Shaw Prize scientists and approximately 200 young scientists from 30 countries, including Thailand. The event, scheduled for November 13-18, is designed as a global scientific exchange and networking opportunity to cultivate future leaders in science, as stated by the Hong Kong Laureate Forum (HKLF), the organisation behind the event.
Initially planned for 2021, the forum was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Timothy Tong, chair of the HKLF, emphasised the forum’s goal to encourage dialogue between cross-generational, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary scientists in order to advance science in Hong Kong and beyond.
Tong said…
“The HKLF has held a number of activities to create platforms for the local scientific research community to share with youngsters and participating Shaw Laureates, with thousands of young future scientists connected with the network.”
Over 20 Shaw Prize winners, specialising in astronomy, life science and medicine, and mathematics, will convene in Hong Kong to share their expertise with young scientists. The Shaw Prize, an annual award established in 2002 in Hong Kong by the Shaw Prize Foundation, recognises scientists for their academic and research achievements, reported Bangkok Post. Past recipients have hailed from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, Japan, and Israel.
Among the 200 young scientists anticipated to attend the forum is a Thai scientist specialising in biomedical engineering. The HKLF has received support from the Lee Shau Kee Foundation since its inception in 2019, and the Shaw Prize Foundation, which organises the annual event, is also a key partner.
Sun Dong, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, expressed the government’s support for the HKLF and the hosting of the forum as a means of showcasing technological advancements in Hong Kong. Colin Lam, director of the Lee Shau Kee Foundation, mentioned that businessman Lee Shau Kee established the foundation to give back to society and support the HKLF’s work.
