Two more found dead in fishing port

PHUKET TOWN: Two more bodies were found on Sunday in the area of the fishing port, bringing the number of corpses found in the area to four in the space of 24 hours. Pol Maj Thanet Puangmanee of Phuket Town Police Station told the Gazette that the first man, as yet unidentified, appeared from his facial features to be from the Indian subcontinent. He is estimated to have been between 25 and 30 years old and was 165 cm tall. He is thought to have died at least four hours before his body was found at 1:30 am. “The victim died from seven stab wounds in his chest and five in his back,” Maj Thanet said. “The wounds appear to have been inflicted with a sharpened steel reinforcing bar.” In the afternoon, another body, believed to be that of a Burmese man, was found near the Saeng Arun fishing raft on Soi Sri Sena. Pol Capt Chaum Kaosrisuwan of Phuket Town Police Station told the Gazette that this man, also as yet unidentified, is estimated to have been 30-40 years old. He is thought to have died at least 12 hours before his body was found at 3:30 pm. “We could find no injuries on the body,” Capt Chaum said, adding that it is assumed the man died of natural causes. “We questioned other fishermen, but nobody knows who these two were,” he said. He added that the impossibility of finding out who the dead men were – or who had employed them – placed a burden on the officer in charge of each case, as he had to pay 1,500 to 2,000 baht from his own pocket for the corpse to be cremated.
