Thai-Burmese border closed
RANONG: All border crossings between Thailand and Myanmar were closed today by Rangoon for undisclosed reasons. Latest reports point to renewed conflict between the two governments over their dealings with the Shan State Army as being the reason. An official at the Immigration Department in Ranong – favored destination for “visa hops” from Phuket – said that the border has been closed by Myanmar. “They closed the border today. We don’t know for how long,” said Pol Lt Wiroj Polsoong-nern. “All passages across the border via land or sea have been halted for the time being.” The Gazette understands that the border closure includes air routes as well. However, it appears that those feeling lucky can gamble on a smooth border crossing to Thayt Kyunt Island (Koh Son), site of the Andaman Club & Casino. A spokesperson for the Andaman Club told the Gazette today that boat trips taking customers from the casino’s pier in Ranong to the island gambling resort are running as usual, and that no one has had any problems entering or leaving either country. For the latest status, the Andaman Club may be contacted at 02-2873031/5.
