Spanish sailor recovering in Phuket after attempted suicide

PHUKET: A Spanish national working on an Indonesian fishing boat is recovering in Phuket International Hospital after slashing his arms yesterday morning.

Phuket Marine Police were notified of a medical emergency on the fishing boat Taishan, moored near Koh Tapao Noi, at about 2am.

“The original report we received said that the man had cut off his own arms,” Phuket Marine Police Chief Panya Chaichana told the Phuket Gazette this morning.

“However, when we arrived, the man’s arms, still attached, had been bandaged.”

The 56-year-old man, whose name the Gazette is withholding to mitigate emotional stress, reportedly attempted to kill himself due to family tension, Col Panya said.

“Hopefully, he will get the care that he needs and his mental state will stabilize while he is under doctors’ supervision,” Col Panya said.
