Phuket’s annual Goat Fair returns [video]
PHUKET: Local farmers are gearing up for the 18th annual Phuket Goat Fair, which will be held June 11 through 13 behind Tesco Lotus in Cherng Talay.
The fair will provide an opportunity for farmers to exchange knowledge, learn from experts and showcase their animals and products.
“The main goal of the event is to urge goat farmers to continue developing better breeding techniques, maximize production, and to always look for better ways to manage their farms,” said Vice Governor Suthee Thongyam.
“Farmers will have the chance to exchange ideas, as well as gain helpful knowledge through discussions with experts from the Livestock Department.”
This can also encourage the sale of Phuket-made agricultural products, such as goat meat and milk, to the Asean Economic Community (AEC).
“Goat meat and milk sales could bring enormous profit to local farmers,” said Vice Governor Suthee.
The three-day event will provide fair-goers with a variety of activities, including goat races, goat beauty pageants and goat-product food contests.
“There will also be buffalo races, Muscovy duck races, bantam races and a fancy goat competition,” V/Gov Suthee added.
A free veterinary clinic will also be set up and available during the fair.
Those looking for a more academic experience may wish to attend the artificial insemination demonstrations or panels discussing the care and upkeep of goats and other animals.
