Phuket wins first medal in 28th Youth Games

PHUKET: Phuket finally bagged its first medal in the 2012 Thailand National Youth Games earlier today, when its cycling team took the bronze in the 70-kilometer road event in Thalang.

Teammates Assadeawut Somnam, Suponchai Bangthong, Thaikhom Chittamat and Apiwat Piromrit used tight formation tactics to cut through the gusty monsoon winds to complete the circuit in 1 hour 46 minutes 30 seconds.

A team from the northern province of Lampang crossed the finish line at 1:43:40 to take gold, while Ubon Ratchathani took the silver with a time of 1:44:35.

More medals will be up for grabs tomorrow in the following sports:
• Track & Field
• Ballroom dancing
• Cycling
• Tennis
• Soft tennis (similar to regular tennis but a soft rubber ball is used)
• Table tennis
• Petanque (a form of the French game of boules)
• Go
• Snooker
• Rowing
• Gymnastics
• Shooting
• Weightlifting
