Phuket sports: Boxing battle on Patong Beach
PHUKET: WBC Asia Continental Super Flyweight (115 pounds) champion Petchbangborn Sor Tanapinyo will defend his title in the main bout of a major fighting event to be held at Patong Beach tomorrow (May 29).
The Thai champ takes on Indonesian challenger Alwi Alhabsyi at the peak of the Boxing and Muay Thai event dubbed “Suk Poon Insee Sataan Lok“, or literally “The Vigorous Poon Insee [sponsor] World Battle”.
Indeed, Phuket will be privy to some premium action with a total of 15 fights – five boxing and 10 Muay Thai – scheduled to take place at the temporary boxing stadium on Patong beach.
With Interior Minister Yongyuth Vichaidit set to preside over the opening ceremonies, fighting will be held from 12pm through to 8.30pm, with live broadcasting on Thai TV from 1:40 to 3.40pm.
In addition to the main match-up, other high profile fights to be staged include Pigmy Pooninseegym versus Indonesian Jack Amisa in the WBC Asia Continental Straw-weight Division (107 pounds); Wisanu Kokietgym versus Indonesian Yuri Rurento in the PABA flyweight class (110 pounds), while Amara Kokietgym will fight Lamnammoon Khwanjaisrikot in the 107 pound weight class.
Muay Thai fights will include 10 pairs of fighters from various gyms, in a series of Thai versus foreigner bouts. Including Thailand, ten nations will be represented with fighters also coming from England, Australia, Sweden, Wales, France, Spain, Brazil, Indonesia and Ireland.
