Phuket mystery clarified: Some to be up in the air

PHUKET: When Sir Winston said it was “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma,” Phuket was not yet on the world stage for much of anything. There were no tuk-tuks, jet-skis or other such lifestyle attractions to put paradise in the headlines, but the thing that’s scheduled to occur here less than two months from now could have some local residents up in the air, while others remain on the ground being ticketed.

Apart from stating officially last month that it’s “great news for Phuket”, no government department has ever announced just what, exactly, is in store for the island, or why details of a program of this magnitude are being withheld from the public so openly. Contacted by the Gazette this morning, an articulate spokesman from the information office immediately said nothing – emphatically.

However, the relevance and value to Phuket of the “great news” is made crystal clear in a document handed to this reporter in strict confidence a few minutes ago, a copy of which we now publish (in confidence) here.
