Government threatens legal action against local TV networks

BANGKOK (The Nation): Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung Friday threatened to invoke Article 85 of the Criminal Code to take legal action against ASTV for broadcasting demonstrations of the People’s Alliance for Democracy [PAD].

Chalerm said cable TV operators in the provinces who relay broadcasts of ASTV to their subscribers would also be taken to task by the government if they do not cease the practice.

He said that Article 85 of the criminal code prohibits advertising or announcing anything that might incite people to engage in “wrongdoing”.

The Interior Mininster is also of the opinion that the PAD has violated Article 215 of the Criminal Code by gathering in numbers of more than 10 people to cause a disturbance.

Chalerm added that private people in Thailand are allowed to watch ASTV in their homes as this is not against the law. It’s only the rebroadcasters of the PAD’s activities who face legal proceedings.
