Challenge Cup basketball showcases Phuket skill

PHUKET: The British International School Phuket (BISP) senior boys team fell just short of a back-to-back success over the weekend at the second annual Challenge Cup basketball tournament.

The team had a strong run, winning all three of their games before facing off with last year’s finalists, Thai Hua.

The hotly-contested, low-scoring game, 19-17, was fraught with solid defense by both teams. However, it was Thai Hua who was able to hold the lead when the final buzzer went – dubbing them the champions of the tournament.

This year saw the introduction of a girls’ division. The BISP senior girls progressed through the pool playoffs with three wins, setting up a final showdown with Satree Phuket, traditionally the powerhouse of girls’ basketball in Phuket.

In the nail-biting final, scores were locked at full time, and two minutes of overtime were played to decide the winner. In the end, Satree’s experience paid off and the team made some crucial baskets to seal the victory.

“After watching the Over 15 Boy’s team’s success in last year’s tournament, the girl’s team and myself were so excited to participate in this year’s tournament,” said Esme Plunkett, captain of BISP Senior Girls.

“We played some really good basketball and the progress we have made since training began this season showed through our game wins. Unfortunately, Satree were able to just beat us in extra time of the final after an intense game and good play from both sides.

“The competition and support that attended were equally great, and we are excited to see the tournament continue to grow.”

Tournament organizer and BISP physical education teacher Jamie Blake rated the the Challenge Cup “a great success” for the second year running.

“The highlight for me as the organizer was seeing the BISP sports hall packed full of supporters and spectators and witnessing a true Friday night basketball scene.

“The atmosphere was fantastic and the players really stepped up to the mark and played some quality school boy basketball throughout the competition.”
