Phuket goes green: Old town steps up for carbon-free tourism
Phuket Old Town took centre stage on Monday, November 18, as the Department of Tourism unveiled its bold initiative to promote low-carbon tourism routes, marking a milestone in sustainable travel for the 2024 fiscal year.
Local leaders and media gathered for the showcase event in the historic heart of Phuket, which spotlighted eco-friendly travel practices and the charm of the island’s cultural heritage.
Samyot Pathan, President of the Old Town Community Enterprise, warmly welcomed the delegation, emphasising the area’s status as a pioneer in low-carbon tourism.
“We are proud to set an example for environmentally conscious travel.”
Attendees explored the Old Town on foot, stopping at key landmarks like the iconic Bann 92, Woo Café, and the historic China Inn. Highlights included a scenic ride on the Dragon Line electric bus and a city tour on electric bicycles, showcasing the seamless integration of green transport options.
An official report revealed the initiative’s aim to inspire sustainable travel habits while fostering a deeper connection with local culture. This aligns with the Department of Tourism’s broader strategy to reduce pollution and promote responsible tourism across Thailand.
Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, Chairperson of the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, unveiled the Phuket Old Town Carbon Neutrality Project at the 25th International Island Tourism Forum in September. The ambitious plan targets a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, carbon neutrality by 2050, and net-zero emissions by 2065.
Data from January to June this year showed Phuket Old Town emitted 525,832 KgCO2e, with electricity use as the biggest culprit at 442,259 KgCO2e, said Project Coordinator Kanruthay, citing collaborations with universities and government bodies to measure and mitigate emissions.
“This is our starting point for change.”
With Phuket Old Town leading the charge, the island is cementing its role as a global model for sustainable tourism, reported Phuket News.
