Phuket launches 50-baht electric bus service from town to Patong
Phuket Smart Bus (PKSB) yesterday launched a new electric bus service connecting Phuket Town and Patong. The service is priced at just 50 baht per passenger.
The launch yesterday, October 9, saw Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat officiating, alongside Atcha Buachan, Chief of the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO). Also in attendance were Waithat Upatising, Executive Director of Phuket City Development Co Ltd (PKCD), PKCD’s Administrative Coordinator Suphakit Thirarangsikul, and Phuket Smart Bus General Manager Natthakanya Namphrai.
Phuket Smart Bus Co Ltd, a venture under PKCD, has a history of initiatives aimed at enhancing Phuket. Earlier this year, PKCD, in collaboration with the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, introduced a free air-conditioned electric bus service in Phuket Town. The new service adds to their existing operations, which include bus routes from the airport along Phuket’s west coast to Rawai.
Governor Sophon emphasised that the new bus route aims to provide both locals and tourists with convenient and eco-friendly transportation options. The initiative also seeks to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution levels in the area.
The electric bus route will pass through significant areas such as Samkong, Kathu, and Patong. Key locations along the route include schools, hospitals, markets, and popular tourist spots like Patong Beach. The service will run daily from 6am to 8pm, with buses departing every hour, said Governor Sophon.
“Phuket Smart Bus has brought six electric buses into service, which are environmentally friendly and help reduce air pollution. This new route is expected to help students travel to school more conveniently and help alleviate traffic problems in the morning and evening.
“The drivers are well-trained and there are eight exits in total: one exit door, one emergency door, and six emergency exit glass hammers.”
The route includes 16 bus stops, ensuring comprehensive coverage of vital areas and making it accessible for a wide range of passengers. This new addition to Phuket’s public transport system is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable tourism and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors, reported Phuket News.
