A grandfather in the southern Thai province of Nakhon Si Thammarat was rushed to the hospital after he swallowed a crab claw and sharp pieces got stuck in his throat. The man’s doctor shared the story to his Facebook. Dr Arak Wongworachat says the man came into the Sichon Hospital over the weekend after the man’s family rushed him to the hospital.

According to the Facebook post, the grandfather couldn’t breathe, had severe pain in his throat, couldn’t speak, appeared confused, and was foaming at the mouth. So, the hospital immediately gave the man a Covid test. The 70 year old patient was unable to communicate with the medical team and he kept holding his throat so the doctors figured out there was a connection between his medical issue and the body part he was grasping.

The Covid test produced a negative result.

The doctors peered into the man’s throat but didn’t see anything unusual. The doctors noted the man had high blood pressure. They then asked the man to rate his pain on a scale of 1 to 10 and the men replied 10, presumably by holding up fingers. The man was then given an X-ray that revealed he had something stuck in his throat all along. Thai media says the X-ray wasn’t clear at first, but eventually, the doctors could make out 2 sharp lines.

An ear, nose, and throat doctor gave the patient pain medication and examined the man’s throat. He managed to pull out two small pieces from the crab claw that was stuck in his throat.

The pain medication allowed some of the man’s worst symptoms to subside and he was able to recount his tale. The man said he had been eating curry rice noodles with crab. He said he was so delighted with his meal that he swallowed 2 spoonfuls of the meal, but skipped the chewing step of the process. He said he immediately felt pain, gulped down some rice but this only intensified the pain.
