A fatal crash involving a pickup truck occurred yesterday on Route 202, in Suwannaphum District, Roi Et Province, where a family was travelling back from a relative’s ordination ceremony.

The 51 year old driver, Suriya, who was behind the wheel of the pickup truck, briefly fell asleep, which resulted in a fatal accident that claimed the life of his 72 year old mother, Pimpa.

The Isuzu pick-up truck, carrying the family of four, veered off the road and rolled over several times. In the incident, Pimpa, a resident of Si Sa Ket Province, was thrown from the pickup truck and crushed, leading to her untimely demise at the scene. Suriya, who was found sitting beside his mother’s lifeless body, suffered minor injuries.

Three other individuals were also injured in the crash, including Suriya’s wife and their 10 year old son. They were promptly transported to Suwannaphum Hospital by the local rescue unit. The family was returning from Roi Et Province with gifts from relatives and several bundles of thatched grass.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Udomsak Salajun, the investigating officer at Suwannaphum Police Station gave a statement.

“Before the incident, Suriya was driving his mother, his wife, and his child from a relative’s ordination ceremony in Roi Et Province.

“They were also carrying souvenirs and several bundles of thatched grass. Upon reaching the accident site, Suriya dozed off momentarily.”

Upon regaining consciousness, Suriya attempted to regain control of the pickup truck, causing it to lose its balance and overturn multiple times. Pimpa, who was sitting in the cab, was thrown out and crushed by the vehicle.

Suriya and his son, both of whom were wearing seat belts, and his wife, who was tightly holding onto the seat, suffered only minor injuries, reported KhaoSod.

The Suwannaphum Rescue Unit, Suwannaphum Hospital, and local police were swiftly on the scene to provide assistance and conduct preliminary investigations.
