An 86 year old Thai man yesterday stabbed a 49 year old friend to death for a lack of respect after drinking alcohol together in the Isaan province of Udon Thani.

Nong Han Police Station officers were alerted to the death of the 49 year old man, Anan Kongchang, at around 12.30pm yesterday, May 13. The incident occurred at a shack in the Ban Non Hua Chiang Community in the Nong Harn district, a common gathering spot for residents to drink alcohol.

Anan sustained a stab wound to the middle of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, 86 year old Jampa Hasook, was at the scene as he was unable to escape due to intoxication.

Jampa informed police and reporters that he killed Anan because of disrespect.

“I bought him alcohol but he didn’t even respect me. He insulted me, so I stabbed him. It’s a matter of male honour not to let anyone insult you.”

Police were unable to conduct a reenactment on the day of the incident due to Jampa’s intoxication. Officers took him to the police station for further questioning and legal proceedings.

A witness, 69 year old Choosak, told the police that Jampa, Anan, and he had been drinking alcohol together since 6am on that day because Jampa kept buying alcohol. Anan complained about Jampa, which led to Jampa’s anger and a fatal attack. The details of the complaint were not disclosed.

Choosak stated that he attempted to intervene in the attack and was also injured near his eye. However, his efforts were unsuccessful due to his intoxication. He expressed sadness over the loss of his friend and the shock that individuals who frequently drank together could resort to violence resulting in death.

The deceased’s sister, 54 year old Nuanchan Kongchang, told Channel 3 that her younger brother had never engaged in conflict with locals in the area before. She believed that alcohol and intoxication were the root cause of the murder.

According to the police report, Jampa was charged under Section 288 of the Criminal Law: intentional murder. The penalty is the death penalty, life imprisonment or imprisonment from 15 to 20 years.
