A 14 year old Thai girl went missing yesterday after she went to play with two friends near a dam in the Isaan province of Buriram.

Officers from Lam Plai Mat Police Station coordinated with volunteer divers to search for the missing girl named Noi who disappeared at around 3pm yesterday, October 2. The incident took place at a weir, 80 metres wide, above the Huay Takian Low-head Dam in the Lam Plai Mat district of Buriram province.

Noi’s friends recounted the events leading to her disappearance to the officers. They explained that they went to the weir to take pictures, not to swim. While walking along the barrier, one of them slipped and nearly fell off.

Noi grabbed her friend’s hand and fell into the water. One girl who was on the weir tried to help by holding their hands. Unfortunately, she was only able to save one friend, while Noi disappeared beneath the water. The girls then rushed to seek help from a community leader.

Divers searched for Noi for more than three hours but could not locate her. The strong current forced the dive team to suspend their search, which they planned to resume once conditions improved.

Noi’s mother told Channel 7 that she warned her daughter not to swim or play near the dam due to the strong currents and increased water levels during the rainy season. Her daughter had secretly gone there with her friends.

In a related report, two 15 year old boys drowned while playing on a boat in the Isaan province of Phichit two weeks ago. They had told their families they were going to play football but had instead opted to paddle a boat.

Their boat capsized, and the two boys screamed for help. Locals rushed to save them, but they were unable to reach them in time.
