Train severs drunk man’s legs while he slept on tracks
dTragedy struck in Chon Buri as a drunk man lost his legs to a train after falling asleep on the train tracks. The incident took place yesterday afternoon in Nong Prue municipality in the Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri.
The unidentified man was described as being around 40 years old and quite intoxicated and was found by the railway track after Nong Prue Police were notified around 4.30pm yesterday. They arrived on the scene and found the man sobbing in pain, his legs fully severed by a passing train.
Police found an empty bottle of Thai whiskey nearby the scene of the gory accident. The man had apparently consumed the bottle of whiskey and once very drunk, fallen asleep on the railroad tracks, sprawled with his legs over the rail itself and his torso and head on the side of the tracks.
As the train approached, the conductor of the train spotted something on the tracks up ahead and notified the staff on the train. They couldn’t see clearly what it was and thought it was some type of log or something similar blocking the tracks. Even if they had been able to see that it was a man passed out on the tracks, the train couldn’t be stopped quickly enough to avoid a collision.
The man was transported to a local hospital, along with his legs, which had both been severed near the knees. The latest information available is that he remains in the hospital after undergoing emergency surgery. He is expected to survive but it is unlikely his legs can be reattached.
