Prominent Thai doctor a suspect in case surrounding Chinese surrogacy gang
A prominent Thai doctor is a suspect in a case surrounding a Chinese surrogacy gang, Nation Thailand reported yesterday. This news comes after police raided a five-storey building in Bangkok’s Silom area on Tuesday, and found that a gang of Chinese and Myanmar nationals were holding two Chinese men for ransom.
Police said the two victims were using the building to operate a surrogacy business for Chinese women. The gang had kidnapped them in Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district, in the Nong Prue sub-district, on March 20. Seven foreigners, including three Myanmar and four Chinese nationals, were initially charged with immigration offences. A Thai was charged with illegally allowing foreigners to stay in Thailand.
Four suspects surrendered themselves to police, including a prominent Thai physician who is reportedly related to a former Provincial Administration director-general.
The abducted victims told officers that the gang provided Thai surrogate mothers and arranged fake passports and IDs. The gang had demanded a ransom of 5 million baht after kidnapping the victims.
The gang is reportedly wanted by Chinese authorities, and police are seeking China’s cooperation.
Deputy National Police Chief Surachet Hakparn, also known as Big Joke, instructed police investigators to expand the investigation and take legal action against all suspects involved in the surrogacy business.
This news comes as crimes by Chinese nationals in Thailand are making headlines across the kingdom.
Last week, three Chinese nationals murdered a 22 year old Chinese woman and dumped her body in a ditch in Nonthaburi. Police in Wuhan, China, yesterday arrested the three men after they fled Thailand. The young Chinese men were initially believed to have kidnapped and killed their compatriot, 22 year old Jin Can, at a rented house in a luxury village just north of Bangkok after failing to obtain a 2.5 million baht ransom from her father in China.
However, the murder was later reported to be because one of the gang was rejected by the woman. The victim was reportedly the ex-girlfriend of one of the suspects back when she lived in China, and she reportedly rejected his advances when he met her in Thailand.
