A man, determined to catch fish for a homemade dish, met a tragic end after slipping and falling onto his electric fishing rod by a canal. Local police were notified of the incident yesterday in Kanchanaburi.

Police and medical personnel rushed to the scene near the canal between Moo 3 and Moo 7 in Tha Maka Subdistrict, Tha Maka District, Kanchanaburi Province. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a 35 year old man lying on his back.

Beside him lay a 2-metre bamboo stick, wrapped with electrical wire, used as an improvised electric fishing rod. The stick’s tip had fallen into the water, and black electrical wires stretched from a nearby sugar cane field across the road to the point where the body was found. Another wire trailed into the canal.

The man’s 32 year old wife, found weeping beside the body, recounted the events. She stated that her husband had insisted on going fishing despite repeated warnings from her and his parents about the dangers of going alone.

He wanted to make Hor Mok, a traditional Thai dish and was determined to catch the fish himself. When he did not return for a long time, his family went searching for him and found him lying by the bank. At first, they thought he was asleep, but upon trying to wake him, they discovered he was dead. She noted that he rarely fished in that area, reported KhaoSod.

Initial investigations suggest that the man may have slipped while checking on the fish traps and fallen onto his electric fishing rod, resulting in his electrocution. The police have sent the body for a detailed autopsy and are conducting further investigations in accordance with the law. The family will later receive the body for religious ceremonies.

In related news, an electrician was severely injured after being electrocuted while connecting power lines on a high-voltage pole in Buriram. Rescue efforts were delayed by 30 minutes due to the late arrival of a separate bucket truck.
