The northeastern border drug suppression unit yesterday seized 400,000 methamphetamine pills along the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom province. The operation underscores ongoing efforts by the military to combat drug trafficking in the region.

The operation yesterday, February 25, was led by the Northeastern Border Narcotics Suppression Command (NBYorSor 24), with support from the Surasak Montri Task Force and local police. A tip-off led police to a suspicious location near the Mekong River, in the vicinity of Ban Don Nang Hong, in That Phanom district, Nakhon Phanom province.

Upon inspection, security forces discovered two sacks hidden in grass, containing the methamphetamine pills.

It is believed the drugs were smuggled from a neighbouring country and left at this site, a known rendezvous point for collection. The sight of the police may have caused those involved to flee the scene hastily, reported KhaoSod.

The confiscated drugs were documented and photographed as evidence before being transferred to the Surasak Montri Task Force’s operational base. The seized methamphetamine is now in police custody for legal proceedings.

In related news, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), in collaboration with partner agencies, intercepted a shipment of 500 kilogrammes of methamphetamine intended for transportation to a neighbouring country. Assets worth 9 million baht were seized and the driver admitted to having transported drugs four times, earning 100,000 baht per trip.

On February 17, the ONCB’s Drug Suppression Bureau announced the arrest of a smuggling operation. Three suspects were detained along with 500kgs of methamphetamine smuggled from the Golden Triangle border region using Thailand as a transit point. The incident occurred in the Takli district of Nakhon Sawan, continuing into Chiang Mai province.

Further investigations led to raids at five locations, including warehouses and residences in Chiang Rai province and Bangkok. A quantity of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were discovered at one of the suspect’s residences. Officials seized assets such as land, vehicles, gold ornaments, and cash, totalling approximately 9 million baht.
