Former Premier League footballer George Baldock has passed away at 31. The Greek defender was discovered in a swimming pool at his residence in Glyfada, a southern suburb of Athens, on Wednesday. The cause of his death is currently unknown.

Baldock had a seven-year tenure at Sheffield United after joining from MK Dons in 2017. He made over 200 appearances for Sheffield United before transferring to Panathinaikos earlier this year. Sheffield United expressed their shock and sadness over his death in a post on X, highlighting his popularity among fans, staff, and teammates during his time at Bramall Lane.

Both Panathinaikos and Greece’s national team darkened their social media profile pictures on Wednesday evening in his memory. Although not included in the Greece squad for Thursday’s match against England, Baldock played in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Olympiacos.

The Greek Super League released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Baldock’s untimely passing, extending condolences to his family and loved ones. England international Harry Maguire, a former teammate at Sheffield United, posted “RIP” with a heartbreak emoji and an image of Baldock on Instagram.

Northampton Town, where Baldock had a loan stint in 2011, also expressed their sadness. The club noted that Baldock made five appearances in 2011 before moving on to play for Oxford United and Sheffield United, sending their condolences to his family and friends.
