JonBenét Ramsey’s father demands untested DNA evidence

John Ramsey criticises police for not testing DNA from JonBenét's murder weapon

JonBenét Ramsey’s father, John Ramsey, has asserted DNA from the murder weapon wasn’t tested in her case.

John Ramsey shared his thoughts on the new series True Crime News, which premiered on 9 September. Speaking with host Ana Garcia, he expressed his frustration over crucial tests he believes should have been conducted earlier.

JonBenét Ramsey, six years old at the time, was tragically found deceased on Boxing Day in 1996. She was brutally beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled in their Colorado home.

Police identified a garrotte as the murder weapon and found DNA from an unknown male on it. However, John claims the investigation halted there, as the DNA wasn’t processed through their database. He remarked, “I don’t know why they didn’t test it in the beginning. To my knowledge, it still hasn’t been tested. If they’re testing it and just not telling me, that’s great, but I have no reason to believe that.”

The case remains unresolved, with no suspects identified by the police. John urged the authorities to pursue every possible investigative avenue. He stated, “We’re not asking you to clear us or apologise or be nice to us again. Just do the things that you should do that can be done. If you do that and we don’t get an answer, we tried. We did everything we could do.”

He highlighted the presence of unidentified male DNA since January 1997, noting a prosecutor’s observation that it was rare for a police department to dismiss such evidence in a sexual assault case.

Garcia mentioned that seven crucial pieces of evidence in the case hadn’t been tested. John confirmed, “To our knowledge, that’s correct. These items sent originally in January 1997 to the lab for testing were returned untested.”

The new series aims to delve into high-profile and lesser-known true crime cases. A press release for the show promises “urgent calls to action for runaway criminals and missing persons” and “heart-stopping ‘caught on cam’ moments” to keep viewers engaged.

The Boulder Police Department has been contacted for comment.
