Half of LGBT+ employees face severe bullying and harassment at work

Survey reveals high workplace bullying and harassment for LGBT+ employees

A survey revealed that half of LGBT+ employees endure significant bullying and harassment at work. The TUC’s survey of 1,000 LGBT+ individuals found that one in five had faced verbal abuse in the workplace over the past five years. Over a quarter reported encountering homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic remarks either directed at them or within their hearing. Additionally, one in 20 mentioned experiencing physical violence, threats, or intimidation due to their sexual orientation.

The union noted that it is unsurprising that nearly 30% of LGBT+ individuals choose to conceal their sexual orientation at work. The survey highlighted that young LGBT+ employees, aged 18 to 24, face particularly high levels of discrimination.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak commented on the findings, emphasizing the severe discrimination LGBT+ workers face. He stated that LGBT+ individuals deserve to feel safe and supported at work but are instead subjected to high levels of bullying and harassment, including assaults. He stressed that workplace culture must change and called on ministers to amend the law, shifting the responsibility for preventing harassment from victims to employers.
