Short-term solutions underway for perilous Phuket curve

PHUKET: Short-term safety measures are now being implemented to slow down motorists approaching the dangerous “100 bodies curve” and should be completed within a week, confirmed officials.

The construction follows a blockade of Chao Fa West Road between Wang Talang Jewelry and Rolly Tasker Sails that was staged on Sunday by villagers, angry about the conditions of the road and the government’s inaction to fix it. The blockade broke apart only after Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut promised quick solutions to increase safety at the dangerous curve (story here).

“We are now adding several speed bumps to the road to slow down motorists. Then, we will place plastic poles to divide the lanes along the entire curve. Four flashing lights and permanent signs urging motorists to slow down when approaching the turn will also be installed,” Wichit Police Deputy Superintendent Ampol Chunthakul told the Phuket Gazette.

Lt Col Ampol met this morning with Governor Maitri, Phuket Highways Office Director Samak Luedwonghadand and other relevant officers to discuss long-term solutions for the problem, he said.

“The Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PPAO) has agreed to give us 3 million baht to build a concrete barrier along the curve. We will begin construction on the barrier after we receive the budget, which should be in about six months,” said Col Ampol.

Col Ampol urges all motorists to drive defensively at all times and in all conditions.

“Please slow down when driving along curves and follow all traffic regulations,” he said. “Even if the road is in excellent condition, if you are not driving safely, you put yourself and others in danger.”
