Richmond shooting: Two dead, five injured after high school graduation
A tragic shooting incident unfolded in Richmond, Virginia, as a man opened fire on a crowd following a high school graduation ceremony, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others. The attack took place on Tuesday near a theatre adjacent to the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, where the graduation had been held.
Police apprehended a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the shooting. He is expected to face charges of two counts of second-degree murder, among other offences, according to interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. Describing the attacker’s actions as “disgusting and cowardly,” Edwards revealed that the dispute appeared to be with just one person. The victims who lost their lives were aged 18 and 36.
The injured individuals included a 31-year-old man who sustained life-threatening injuries and four other males aged 14, 32, 55, and 58, who were expected to survive. A nine-year-old girl was also hit by a car amidst the ensuing chaos, while several others were injured in falls or suffered from anxiety. The suspect fled the scene on foot but was later captured with four handguns in his possession, three of which may have been fired, though Edwards stressed that the investigation was still in its early stages.
The shooting occurred in Monroe Park, situated across the street from the theatre and adjacent to the college campus, following Huguenot High School’s graduation ceremony. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras stated that the ceremony had concluded, and the newly graduated students were outside taking photos with family and friends when the shooting began.
Edwards commented on the tragic event, saying, “When you have a crowd like this, innocent people are going to be caught up in the mayhem, and that’s what happened today.” The United States has witnessed a disturbing trend of mass shootings in public places, such as schools, shopping centres, and churches.
