GPS open to supporting allies in six Peninsular Malaysia state elections
Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Alexander Nanta Linggi has not ruled out the possibility of the party supporting coalition members in the unity government during campaigns in six state elections in Peninsular Malaysia. Although GPS is not directly involved in these polls, Linggi stated that the party would not mind assisting as Sarawak is on friendly terms with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, which is now its ally at the federal level.
“GPS is part of the whole coalition of the federal government, where other parties in the federal government are contesting in the six state elections,” he said. However, he clarified that GPS would not actively campaign in the peninsula. Instead, they would offer support to friends and coalition partners if necessary.
Linggi, who also serves as the works minister in the Federal Cabinet, explained that the situation would depend on the leadership of the GPS, which has not yet made a firm decision on the matter. He emphasised that it would not be wrong for him to support either Barisan Nasional (BN) or PH, as long as they are friendly to GPS at the federal level.
“It’s not wrong to help, because we (GPS) are friendly to PH as a coalition partner. For me, there’s nothing wrong if you want to help,” he said. Linggi added that, personally, he has no issue with GPS helping to campaign for parties under the unity government.
