UPDATE: Fire on Koh Phi Phi
The fire zone following the blaze on Phi Phi last night is being cleared since early this morning (January 7) while Ao Nang Sub-district Administration Organization (OrBorTor), tourism businesses and Phi Phi Island Protection and Conservation Club have set up a registration list for fire victims. The area where the fire is thought to have started remains limited access, waiting for a full forensic police investigation.
The President of Phi Phi Island Protection and Conservation Club, Wuttisak Thongkerd, commented on the incident saying that the limited access of fire fighting equipment made the fire worse and the buildings in the area were flammable.
“There are at least 25 buildings damaged as a result of the fire. If we had enough water and the buildings were not that crowded, it wouldn’t have resulted in as much loss.
The buildings are mainly made of flammable materials. The government departments involved should also take some responsibility over this incident.”
