Phuket cracks down on deadly road accidents with safety workshop

Phuket officials are stepping up their fight against dangerous road accidents with a new strategy aimed at reducing fatalities and making roads safer. With alarming accident statistics continuing to rise, officials gathered for a high-level road safety workshop to analyse crash causes and implement life-saving measures.
The Phuket Road Safety Centre hosted the event yesterday, March 4, at Phuket Provincial Hall, under the title Techniques for Analysing Causes of Road Accidents According to Risk Factors.
Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong presided over the workshop, alongside Sopon Thongsai, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM Phuket).
Vice Governor Adul acknowledged that road accidents are a major threat to lives, property, and economic growth, particularly in Phuket, where the province’s economy heavily depends on tourism.
He stressed the need for continuous data-driven strategies to tackle risk factors and prevent accidents effectively.
The workshop was designed to equip officials and safety agencies with analytical skills to assess the root causes of crashes related to human behaviour, vehicle conditions, road infrastructure, and environmental factors.
Participants engaged in group training exercises, where they analysed real-life accident scenarios and developed prevention strategies.
“The initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of officials across Phuket’s three districts, enabling them to conduct accurate accident investigations and develop effective prevention measures,” said a spokesperson for the Phuket Road Safety Centre.
The workshop comes amid worrying road safety statistics in Phuket. According to ThaiRSC, 15 people have died and 6,202 have been injured in road accidents in Phuket so far this year.
Just yesterday alone, 61 people were injured in crashes, and 14 more injuries have already been recorded today, March 5.
Last year, Phuket saw a staggering 147 road fatalities and 25,968 injuries, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, reported The Phuket News.
Officials hope this latest initiative will help curb the rising toll of accidents and make Phuket’s roads safer for locals and tourists.
