Red flags up on Phuket’s deadliest beach

PHUKET: Lifeguards on Phuket’s deadliest beach have put out red flags to warn of strong surf.

The warnings have been set up on Kata Beach and Karon Beach. Eight people drowned at Karon Beach between October 2012 and September 2013, making it the deadliest beach in Phuket (story here).

“There have been strong, high waves lately. I would like to warn tourists not to swim where there are red flags,” said Phuket Lifeguard Club President Prathaiyut Chuayuan.

“I suggest that nobody swim at the beaches right now.”

Uten Singsom, Kata-Karon chief lifeguard, said that some tourists are disregarding the flags.

“Even though the flags are up, some tourists are still going in to swim. When we see them, we warn them and try to urge them to get out of the water. Some listen to us, but some ignore us, which is very dangerous,” Mr Uten said.

“Tourists need to recognize that red flags signify ‘No swimming’.

“We have lifeguards standing by in case an accident occurs. However, beachgoers’ cooperation is essential for their safety.”

Stormy weather is expected to continue through Tuesday (weather report here).
