Phuket hosts Asia-Pacific Marine conference
PHUKET: Some 80 delegates from 21 countries, all members of Asia and Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) working groups, are in Phuket for a convention on Marine Resource Conservation and Fisheries, which is taking place at the Novotel Coralia Phuket resort until May 20.
The event, organized by the Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning Office of Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, was opened today by Phuket Vice-Governor Vinai Buapradit and the Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Dr Maitree Duangsawasdi.
Dr Maitree said that the objective of the meeting was to examine ways of working together to conserve marine resources and fisheries within the Apec region.
“National policy should place more emphasis on balancing sustainable utilization of marine and coastal resources with conservation and the rehabilitation of marine and coastal resources,” Dr Maitree told those present.
