Phuket energy exhibition ends Thursday

PHUKET CITY: To mark Thailand’s “Energy Day 2009”, some 200 people took part in a six-kilometer bike ride to Saphan Hin, where a one-week exhibition and sale of energy-saving devices attracted a lot of visitors over the past weekend.

Taking part in the ride and opening event on June 26 was Phuket Vice-Governor Tri Augkaradacha, Ministry of Energy (MoE) Phuket Office chief Jirasuk Tummawetch, and a number of other local officials and students.

The MoE has designated the province as “Phuket Green Island” because of its natural beauty and status as a world-class tourist destination, Mr Jirasuk said.

“This event will increase public awareness about ways to conserve energy, reduce carbon emissions that cause global warming, and reduce energy imports. We hope to change people’s energy consumption behavior and promote the use of alternative energy sources, including natural gas, gasohol and biodiesel,” Mr Jirasuk said.

The exhibition, which is protected from the elements by a large canopy, is taking place at the main stage area, near the Seashell Circle.

Thursday will be the last day the public can take advantage of good deals on energy-saving electronic devices and other environmentally friendly goods and equipment.
