Phuket drivers ‘the worst’: Gazette poll
PHUKET: Phuket drivers don’t think much of fellow road users, with more than 80% saying they are worse than drivers abroad, the results of the latest Phuket Gazette reader’s poll reveal.
In the poll launched a week ago, readers were asked: How would you rate the overall behavior of motorists in Phuket compared to those in other places, outside of Thailand, where you have driven?
Overall, 80.9% of respondents said Phuket drivers were worse, compared to just 6.1% who thought they were better.
Almost 60% of those who voted rated Phuket drivers “much worse”, while just 3.4% said they were “much better”.
A small number (4.1%) of the 638 people who cast votes answered: “Don’t know. I have never driven abroad.”
There was an interesting demographic skewing of the results.
People who identified themselves as foreign expat residents or tourists were far more likely to think Phuket drivers were worse than their counterparts abroad, at 89% and 82% respectively.
A majority of Thais (38%) thought Phuket drivers were worse than drivers in other countries, compared to 21% who thought they were better.
However, a quarter of the Thais who took part said they didn’t know because they had never driven overseas.
