Phuket aims at world golf record
PHUKET: In an effort to raise international awareness of the island’s growing golf tourism industry, Phuket province is to try to get in the Guinness Book of World Records by hosting the world’s biggest golf tournament
It is hoped that the “Phuket – Golf Paradise of Asia” golf tournament, on March 5, will attract at least 500 golfers from around the world, with an official representative of Guinness World Records invited to count the participants. Oddly, no such record is currently included in the Guinness book.
The tournament is being organized jointly by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Region 4, the Phuket Golf Association, the Thai Hotels Association Southern Chapter, the Phuket Tourist Association, the Phuket Chamber of Commerce and the participating golf courses.
The plan is to have golfers will tee off at 11:30 am to the sound of starter’s pistols at the five participating venues: Mission Hills Phuket Golf Club, Blue Canyon Country Club (Lakes Course), Phuket Country Club, Loch Palm Golf Club and Laguna Phuket Golf Club.
Golf Association President Surin Bamrungphol said that the event would target important members of the golf media and well-known travel agencies. He said he hoped it could develop into an annual event, serving as the golfing equivalent of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.
