OrBorTor moves to keep Koh Maphrao clean
KOH MAPHRAO: In a move to keep Koh Maphrao clean, Koh Kaew Tambon Administration Organization (OrBorTor), the local authority responsible for Koh Maphrao, will place trash cans around the island.
Koh Kaew OrBorTor President Kuakiat Jitkua today told the Gazette, “I’m trying to improve waste disposal at Laem Hin and Koh Maphrao.
“On Wednesday, we held a beach cleanup with local villagers and I will start having trash cans placed around the island. The trash will be brought back to Laem Hin, where it will be separated.
He added that to keep Koh Maphrao beautiful will require some help from the villagers themselves. “First, we have to educate them, because some of them who live near the beach still dump their waste into the sea, which does not help the environment.
“Also, most of the land on Koh Maphrao is now privately owned, so it’s not easy to find a suitable plot to burn off trash or use as a landfill site, which has been suggested.
“Regardless, the villagers usually bring their waste to the trash collection point at Laem Hin, where OrBorTor officers collect it and take it to the incinerator at Saphan Hin,” he said.
