Marine Police increase safety checks after death of French tourist
PHUKET: Phuket and Krabi Marine Police are ramping up safety checks in order to get tour operators to comply strictly with marine regulations.
The boost comes hard on the heels of the death of a French tourist who was killed last week after being struck in the head by a speedboat propeller while snorkelling near Poda Island (story here).
Phuket Marine Police have already checked the documentation and condition of tour boats and staff at several tourist spots.
“We checked nearly 150 boats at three different piers and also talked to thousands of tourists,” said Phuket Marine Police Chief Panya Chaichana. “We found no illegal activity, boats or operators.”
Meanwhile, Krabi Marine Police have issued an official letter urging tour operators to strengthen their compliance with safety regulations in order to avoid marine accidents.
“Companies must strictly meet the safety criteria before starting a trip. There must be signs indicating how many passengers are allowed on the boat and all boats must have rescue equipment readily available at all times,” Lt Col Anurak Parinyasathiragul of the Krabi Marine Police said.
“Tourists need to wear life jackets and the boat driver must drive responsibly and not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
Col Anurak also noted that operators must stay updated about local weather conditions.
“These are all basic regulations that need to be enforced strictly. At our end, we will continue to be consistent with checks and inspections and arrest those who do not obey the law,” Col Anurak said.
