Krabi Kayaking competition underway
PHUKET: The Krabi-Enlive Sea Kayak Thailand Championship and the 3rd Sea Kayak Asian Cup are under way.
The two events were organized to enable canoeing and water enthusiasts to showcase their skills, to raise awareness of ecotourism, and to help cultivate a culture of sustainable tourism in Krabi, said TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik.
“These fun events are being held to help reaffirm Krabi’s commitment to encouraging tourism that does not harm the natural wonders of the land and sea.”
The official opening ceremony was held yesterday at Krabi’s Cultural Center in Krabi Municipality.
The Krabi-Enlive Sea Kayak Thailand Championship 2014 comprises Surf Ski, Single-Seat and Two-Seat Sea Kayak competitions, while the 3rd Sea Kayak Asian Cup 2014 will feature only the Surf Ski, comprising men’s 22 kilometers and women’s 12km races.
Competitors in the race will take off from Krabi’s attractive Ao Nang Bay and cross the finish line at Lan Pudam. Winners of the Surf Ski competition and the Enlive Sea Kayak Thailand Championship will be presented with the royal trophy of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Rowing sports have long been an exciting and environmentally-friendly way to explore the offshore wonders of Krabi, and the popularity of the sports have been growing in the region for several years.
“This is why the concept of sustainability, or ecotourism, is a top priority, and any tourism activities which are clean, green, non-polluting and sustainable are always encouraged and promoted,” said Mr Thawatchai.
TAT is organizing the events in collaboration with Krabi Provincial Authorities, Enlive Foundation, the Rowing and Canoeing Association of Thailand and the Royal Thai Navy.
