PHUKET TOWN: Many of Phuket’s restaurants need to lift their standards of cleanliness and service, according to Cdr Dr Deja Sukaromana, the Deputy Minister of Public Health. Cdr Dr Deja is in Phuket to promote the “Amazing Hygienic Food” campaign set up by the Phuket Provincial Health Department and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Restaurants are an intrinsic part of tourism in Phuket and bring in a lot of revenue, Cdr Dr Deja said. But, he noted, a check of restaurants on the island found that many still need to improve standards. Restaurants meeting the standards set by the campaign, including cleanliness, service, equipment and food quality, will be eligible to place a sign in their windows stating their establishment has been approved by the “Amazing Hygienic Food” campaign. Of the [unspecified number of] establishments inspected between January 1 and January 15, 1999, a total of 14 have received approval. These include the Phuket Airways Kitchen at the airport, the Thai Airways restaurant in the airport terminal building, the Phuket Merlin Hotel, the Royal Phuket City hotel, The Metropole hotel, the Sin Thavee Hotel, the Thai Naan Restaurant, the Lanna Restaurant, the Sieng Sien restaurant, the Mae Porn restaurant, the Kao Suy restaurant, Jimmy’s Lighthouse, the Uptown Pork Noodle Restaurant :-), and Khun Jeed’s Yod Pak restaurant.
