Father and son die in horror crash
MAI KHAO, PHUKET: A man was decapitated and his son killed after their 22-wheel tractor-trailer overturned on the notorious Kho En “death bend” on Thepkrassatri Rd on Monday night.
Suchakorn Veruvannarak, 39, was driving the rig to Rassada Harbor with his 4-year-old son Suchasit and another man, Atisorn Chukorn, when the accident occurred during heavy rains at about 10:30 pm.
Police suspect Mr Suchakorn fell asleep at the wheel as they reached the bend, causing the truck to run out of control and turn over.
The trailer bed was laden with heavy sheets of rubber. The sudden impact caused at least one of the sheets to fly from the back of the vehicle into the driving cabin, decapitating Mr Suchakorn.
It took Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers around 30 minutes to locate his head.
Suchasit also died in the crash, according to a local Thai language newspaper that ran graphic images of the tragedy’s aftermath.
Mr Atisorn, whose legs were almost severed, remains in a coma in Vachira Phuket Hospital.
The Kho En bend is notorious as an accident blackspot in Phuket and has been nicknamed “the bend of a hundred corpses” by the local Thai media.
