Big C joins recycling program
PHUKET TOWN: A recycling scheme is to be introduced under an arrangement between Big C supercenter and the Governor’s Office. Dry recyclable waste, including sorted bottles cans and newspapers, can be deposited in the underground car park at Big C daily between noon and 7 pm from May 24. The island produces 300 tons of rubbish each day but Phuket’s incinerator can only dispose of 250 tons. In an effort to find a long-term solution, Governor CEO Pongpayome Vasaputi has been discussing methods of recycling with community organizations, among them the Thai Environmental And Community Development Association, which runs the Magic Eyes (Taa Wisate) project. Khunying Chodchoy Sophonpanich, Chairwoman of the Association, said the project aimed to reduce waste and pollution through recycling. Governor Pongpayome suggested the people should be able to leave recyclable waste at all temples and schools in Phuket as a means of decreasing waste in a useful way. The association is promoting broader understanding of recycling in the community.
